Seven southern West Virginia teachers are among 74 from around the state who have earned National Board Certification, the highest credential in the teaching profession.

All will be honored this evening in a special ceremony at The Clay Center in Charleston.

Area teachers earning National Board certification are:

  • Fayette County - Christy Gill and Linda Nevi
  • Greenbrier - Bobbie Deitz
  • Nicholas - Holly Miller and Sharon Neal
  • Raleigh - Karen Bonnett
  • Wyoming - Brenda Smith.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent, organization governed by a 63-member board of directors made up of mostly classroom teachers. Its mission is to establish high and rigorous standards for what teachers should know and be able to do and to voluntarily assess and certify teachers who meet those standards.
