OHSAA Awards Three Scholarships

The winners of the Oceana High School Alumni Association's annual scholarship have been announced. This year's recipients are Markie Gunnells of Hanover, Kaycee Cook of Oceana, and Cody Vinson of Cyclone. Each of the three Westside High seniors will receive $1,000 in scholarship monies to be used toward their college expenses.

"We are so pleased that we can give three scholarships this year," said Lillian Cook, who spearheads the scholarship committee for the Association. "The awarding of this scholarship is a big part of what our group focuses on each year. We are proud of these three students who have excelled at Westside and we believe they will continue to make us proud when they go to college to pursue their life goals."

All three scholarship recipients and their parents were recognized at the OHS Alumni Association's Mix and Mingle.

Kaycee Cook

Kaycee Cook is the daughter of Kenny E. and Rhonda Trull-Cook of Oceana.

She is a member of the Co-Ed-Hi-Y, RAZE, Theater Troupe and National Honor Society. She has been a member of the Spanish Honor Society and served as secretary of the Student Government her junior year. Cook has received awards for Student of the Month, Faithful Attendance, Class Honors, Outstanding Student Award, and Concord Book Award. She attended Concord Summer Academy, the Governor's Honors Academy and Regional RAZE-ON.

Her community involvement includes being a volunteer for the Wyoming County Toy Fund and Haunted House. Kaycee plans to attend Concord University to study pathology.




Markie Gunells

Markie Gunnells is the daughter of Mark and Teresa Gunnells of Hanover.

She has been involved in a variety of activities while at Westside, including the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Co-Ed-Hi-Y, the Dance Studio, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Spanish Club, and RAZE. Gunnells has been a member of the girls varsity basketball team for four years and serves as captain of the team. She also was a participant in the 2007 WV Governor's Honors Academy and a 2007 FCA Scholar (2nd team, national). She has won awards for Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, AP Spanish, WV Distinguished Writing Assessment, WHS Faculty Award, National Spanish Exam (7th in state), Young Writers, Student of the Month, Honors Science, World History, Honors English and Algebra I.

Active in her community, she has participated in the Sparky/St. Jude's fundraiser, attended the Co-Ed-Hi-Y Leadership Camp, and attended other camps for cheerleading and basketball. Markie plans to attend West Virginia University and study exercise physiology.




Cody Vinson

Cody Vinson is the son of Drema Kay Vinson of Cyclone and the late Steve Vinson.

He is captain of the tennis team at Westside and has participated in basketball, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, theater, Student Government, Student Council, Leo Club, RAZE, Chess Club, prom committee, National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. He has received the Faculty Award, Citizenship Award, Perfect Attendance, Faithful Attendance, Spanish Award, English Award, Principal's Leadership Award, National Honor Society Award, FCA Award (2nd team, national), Wendy's High School Heisman (state finalist), Student of the Month and County Art Award.

His involvement in the community includes serving on the Wyoming County Youth Council, St. Jude's Bike-A-Thon, Regional RAZE-ON, church nursery duty and Energy Express volunteer. He has been active in the Aracoma Story Inc. and Guyandotte Players community theaters, and church plays. Cody will attend West Virginia Wesleyan College to study optometry.
