Ecstatic about English with Estelene

Mrs. Boratenski's wisdom inspires Lanning's passion

(Estelene Williamson Boratenski is a 1974 graduate of OHS)

On the first day of school every year, students gather together and examine each other's schedule cards. We gossip about which teachers are easy, which are hard, who is tough, and who will let you slide with whatever you want to. After exchanging my schedule card with my friends (indicating two semesters of honors English 10 with Mrs. Boratenski), I was prepared for a rough year from a strict and demanding teacher.

The first day of class, Mrs. Boratenski was standing outside of her room with a great big smile. As I approached the door she gave me the warmest, "Good morning," that I had ever received. At that moment I knew that she wasn't as strict as she had been labeled.

After we passed the introduction part, Mrs. Boratenski started the lesson. Immediately, I knew that this year would be difficult, but I also knew that I would learn a lot. She went over everything in detail. She constantly encouraged kids to ask questions if they did not have a "gut understanding." I thought she was wonderful.

I looked forward to Mrs. Boratenski's class everyday. I learned about reading for detail, thinking critically and analytically, how to write proficiently, and for the first time in my school career, I learned about grammar.

Mrs. Boratenki is an incredibly hard working and busy person, but no matter how busy she is, she will always take time away from herself to help you. I cannot even count how many times I visited Mrs. Boratenki's office for help on class essays, college essays, college recommendations, or just advice.

Mrs. Boratenski has taught me to challenge my own ideas. She has taught me to step out of my comfort zone, and she has taught me that you always get out what you put in. In ten years, I will probably forget what she said about the symbolism in Lord of the Flies, but I will always remember and use what I learned about life.

Mrs. Boratenski's warmth and passion for what she teaches create an unbelievable learning environment and an unforgettable teacher. I will sincerely miss her. So, Mrs. Boratenski, thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you have invested in all of your students' learning.
