Swope Farm Cemetery, Indian Creek

Located on Indian Creek, on the right as you enter the Swope Farm from Co. Rt. 12-4. One must be looking for it to spot it, however it is easily seen on the way out of the farm. It is a strange cemetery, wrapped around the mountain with unplanned placements, totally shaded by tall, old trees.

Notes:

  1. There are 8 Unknown graves marked with head and footstones (literal stones, or as we say here-"rocks"), but no inscriptions.
  2. Many of the stones here were beautifully shaped (as the back of a chair), smoothly rounded, with a rectangular bottom put into the earth six inches. Someone knew what they were doing and was apparently called upon to do it often.

Recorded by Peggy L. Blackburn with Debbye Allen Miller. 14 September 1998.
